“Respect Your Health – Tobacco Free”. Here is the slogan used by UEFA to promote their “Tobacco-Free” policy campaign during the EURO 2016 in France. For those who did not know yet, UEFA announced last May their intention to organise an event prohibiting smoking across all internal and external areas of the ten French stadiums staging UEFA EURO 2016 matches from 10 June to 10 July next year. There are two purposes of this campaign according to UEFA: give a good example to young people and fight the largest preventable cause of premature death and chronic disease around the globe.
Healthy Stadia will be working alongside UEFA in this operation, and will coordinate teams of “No Tobacco volunteers” to enforce the initiative. Volunteers play an essential part in the well functioning of such events, and over 6,500 are expected to help in the organization of the EURO 2016. In order to fully implement the “Tobacco-free campaign”, Healthy Stadia sent out a call for volunteers. Applicant simply need to be to be over the age of 18, speak both French and English, and be non-smokers to apply.
The Director of the European Healthy a Stadia Network is proud of the initiative and announced that “The policy for UEFA EURO 2016 is one of the most progressive of its kind used at a sports tournament”. They hope this new benchmark will be adopted by other competitions, both inside and outside of football, but first lets focus on making this operation a success.
